SUNSHINE BAE

Sunshine Bae is Seoul-based DJ Didi Han, the kind of girl that you can count on for a new song recommendation that will blow your mind. She left her fashion career to pursue the music that had always been in her heart. Taking that gamble, she opened a Soundcloud account to concentrate even more on it. Her mix caught the attention of Pute Deluxe. Now, she is part of the music collective instrumental to Seoul’s underground music scene.

WHAT’S THE FIRST ALBUM YOU EVER PURCHASED?

I bought my first CD player when I was 10. At that time, I listened to Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and The Cranberries. I think the first album I purchased was by one of them.

SHARE WITH US A RECENT DEVELOPMENT IN YOUR MUSICAL JOURNEY.

I will be going to Hong Kong to play at the ALTN8 festival next month. This is my first time going abroad to DJ! I’ve also started learning to make music. It will take a while but I’m sure I can show my music in the future.

When I first started DJ-ing, my sound was quite limited. I played a lot of grime and dub, only. Recently, I discovered new things and I’ve started including other genres to my sets. At the same time, I’ll always stick to my musical style.

WHAT HAS INFLUENCED YOUR CURRENT MUSIC STYLE?

As I was working in fashion, I was influenced by the music section of fashion magazines, like i-D or Dazed & Confused. I also looked up the background music played at fashion shows. I was exposed to a diverse music genre and that’s why I think my music style is mixed. Nowadays, I’m influenced a lot by future bass and house music.

HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED?

My projects are usually inspired by past experiences rather than what I’m feeling now. Everything is an inspiration, from good movies to exhibitions. It could even come from meeting friends! I don’t get inspiration immediately. It comes when I least expect it to. So, I make it an effort to do all kinds of things and I constantly look for new music.

YOU’RE PART OF PUTE DELUXE. WHY IS CREATIVE SUPPORT IMPORTANT?

Each of us are interested in different genres. With this, we create a synergy effect. We’re like a rainbow! Different nationalities, various interests. For example, Lindsay is really good at photography. Fallens is good at writing. All the others have their own special talents! Just to exist together — it’s really creative for me. Having a crew gives me power. It’s family.

WHAT ARE 3 SONGS THAT WE NEED TO LISTEN TO?

1. Pelican Child (Louis The Child + Pell) – Turn Me Down
2. whereisalex – drake flow (Listen till the end!)
3. Earth, Wind & Fire – Got to Get You Into My Life (I can’t wait for this summer!)

FINALLY, WHO IS YOUR NEXT BAE FEATURE SUGGESTION?

L-like. She’s a producer and a DJ. She’s really good at both producing and DJ-ing.
